The "Walking Mic" test procedure
. The "Walking Mic" test procedure Here's a set of instructions I wrote a while ago, on how to do what I call the "walking mic" test in your studio. This is a very boring, tedious procedure using REW (if you don't know what REW is, then see here: How to calibrate and use REW to ...

Re: Attic Shaped Studio
I think I'll have a look behind the skirting boards to check the wall / floor joins as well, and seal with acoustic caulk if required. Acoustic caulk is great, but its often expensive. Ordinary bathroom/kitchen caulk works very well for this, and is cheaper. Get the type that sticks like crazy to a...

Re: Double Garage design - East Sussex
Firstly, thank you for the detailed and incredibly helpful response Stuart. This has given me much food for thought and a timely reminder that no matter how well I believe I have things figured out, there’s always room for improvement! The specific advice on caulking and manufacturing the flitch be...

Site-built door pair, for high isolation.
Site-built back-to-back studio door pair, for high isolation. A quick photo-sequence on how to build your own isolation doors for your studio, with windows in them, and still get good isolation. This is a companion article to the site built window for high isolation , and uses a simple but very eff...

Among other issues, I imagine the lensing effect of that curve would put a terrible amount of instrument spill into the vocal mic, and the same would happen with the sound coming from the vocal monitor wedge? Feedback city. Exactly. There was a point a few feet out from the front edge of the stage,...

SHORT Book List
It is a great text. The point is what is the focus of the list? I view the list as a short what you need to be competent designing your studio Trying to summarize, he is great but not for that group. Agreed. The others are more up to date as well, and in many cases cover things better than he did. ...

So true! Their old stuff was great but they don't seem to be doing much acoustic research these days. Or rather, a lot less than before. Pity.Avare wrote:Great idea but of your BBC doc library is like mine is there a server large enough in Chile?

A few years ago, I was hired to improve the isolation of a new church being built in a residential area in Santiago, Chile, where they were concerned that their services would annoy the neighbors. They were right about that, and I did fix the isolation issue for them, but take a look at the interest...

Hi Scott, and welcome to the forum! :) Very glad you found your way over here. I have been reading on the John Sayer's forum, (where I posted this same question and no one responded), as well as Rod's book for the past week or so, and have tried to research as many questions as I can before posting,...

Happy week-eversary to us!
The forum is now officially one week old! :yahoo: Soundman-recording-studio-design-forum-one-week-candle-cake-SML-ENH.jpg I had the place running a couple of days before for testing and tweaking, but I hadn't taken it public yet... Then John Steel was the first real member to sign up, exactly a week...

I guess we must be doing something right here on the new forum! We had our very first spammer arrive last night... :) No idea how he found us, but I guess it's sort of good news that spammers think the place is important enough to spend the time creating a fake profile, then posting some garbage... ...

Your commentary on Rose was interesting. It is amazing as a short (dare I write pithy) document on the acoustics of one the largest groups involved with acoustics Ahhh! THAT one! I had that filed under "BBC Engineering Guide" for some reason, and without the author. No wonder I couldn't f...

Re: New Studio (With Measurements)
Hi there "landocommando", and Welcome to the forum! :) :thu: I'm looking at your REW data now, and there's a lot that needs doing in your room! For example, you have some pretty big modal issues at around 43 Hz and 110 Hz, as well as a possible SBIR dip or floor bounce dip, and you also ha...

Re: Amp Riser Effectiveness
That sounds about right to me, Jennifer. Also, the fan might have been noisy mostly at higher frequencies, where your make-shift riser was more effective than just 3 dB, while the amp was putting out more energy down low, where the riser wasn't so effective. Using a lighter insulation might have a g...
